Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Earlier in 2012, Local Power in partnership with QUT Science and Engineering,
held the Australian Premiere screening of Revenge of the Electric Car

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have the advantages that
they can be powered by renewable energy (solar and wind),
will reduce our oil imports,
improve our urban air quality and
you can charge up at home and never visit a petrol station again!

Did you know that it takes more electricity
to refine oil into petrol to take a petrol car 100km,
than an electric vehicle needs to go 100km?

Did you know that if your EV was 100% powered by coal it would have no worse CO2 emissions than a petrol car? Source

But our grid isn't 100% coal and as our grid gets cleaned up (it's over 10% renewable already and will be 20% renewable by 2020), or if you charge using GreenPower, or you have Solar PV on your roof, your transport carbon emissions are already lower than a petrol car and can even be zero.

The following EVs are available, or will be available in Australia, in 2012.
Expected RRP costs are also shown where known.  On road costs are extra.

Please return to this page regularly as we will be adding more information.

All of the above are pure electric vehicles (i.e. no exhaust tailpipe), except the Holden Volt, which also has a petrol generator to boost it's range.

All of the above include a battery with the purchase except the Renault Fluence which requires a battery leasing arrangement, most likely with company Better Place.

Local Power was founded in June 2007 and is a pioneer in Australian Solar PV Buying Groups.
Several people have asked us whether we could do a Buying Group for EVs.
We are happy to see if we can!

If you think you might like to buy a new EV later this year, please register your interest on this page below.

I would like to register my "Expression of Interest" in being part of an Electric Vehicle (EV) Buying Group.
